Short answer

There is no guaranteed way to appear in ChatGPT; OpenAI states that inclusion is not guaranteed. There are three things you can do: make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site and your CDN does not block OpenAI's IP addresses, write pages that answer the customer's question in the first paragraph, and be listed with correct information on the outside sites ChatGPT cites. Blocking GPTBot does not switch off search visibility; that bot is for model training.

Someone who asks ChatGPT "can you recommend a good dental clinic in Leeds?" or "which invoicing software works for a small business?" sees a few names and a few links in the answer. There is no ad panel to buy your way in and no form to apply through. What you can do is limited, but it is not vague: OpenAI writes part of it down in its own documentation.

This article is based on that documentation (read on 12 October 2026), and where the documentation says nothing, it says "unknown".

Where does ChatGPT get its answer?

From two places:

  • What the model knows from training. When ChatGPT answers without searching, it writes only what it remembers from the text it was trained on. These answers carry no links and the information can be out of date.
  • Web search. When ChatGPT searches, it reads the pages it finds and places source links under or inside the answer. According to OpenAI's help page, ChatGPT search sometimes works with other search providers, and in doing so it rewrites the user's question into one or more targeted queries.

The practical consequence of the second point: the user types a long sentence and the system breaks it into short search queries. Your page has to be findable for those short queries, which is largely the same job as being visible in classic search.

OpenAI's four bots

OpenAI's crawler documentation lists four user agents. To appear in ChatGPT you need to know what each one means.

BotWhat it is forDoes it affect appearing in ChatGPT search
OAI-SearchBotSurfacing sites in ChatGPT's search featuresYes. A site that blocks it is not shown in search answers
GPTBotCrawling content that may be used in model trainingNo. It is a separate decision
ChatGPT-UserOpening a page on the spot when a user asks for somethingIt does not determine whether you are included in search
OAI-AdsBotChecking landing pages submitted as ads in ChatGPTNo; it only concerns advertisers

Three more details from the documentation:

  • The settings are independent of each other. You can block GPTBot and allow OAI-SearchBot; your content is then not used in training but can still be shown in search.
  • A site that blocks OAI-SearchBot is not shown in search answers; its name can still appear as a navigational link that takes the user to the site.
  • A change you make in robots.txt can take about 24 hours to be reflected on the search side.

For ChatGPT-User, the documentation says robots.txt rules may not apply because these requests are started by a user.

Five things you can do

1. Open the door to OAI-SearchBot

The help page names two conditions for eligibility: OAI-SearchBot must be able to crawl the site, and your hosting or CDN service must allow traffic from the search bot IP addresses OpenAI publishes. The second condition is often missed: even with an open robots.txt, a "block AI bots" setting on the CDN stops the bot at the door.

The simplest robots.txt example:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

This example allows search and refuses training. If you want to allow training as well, leave out the second block. You can see what your current file says with the free AI bot and llms.txt checker; a comparison of all the bots is in the AI crawlers and robots.txt guide.

Because ChatGPT turns the question into search queries, the pages that can be found for those queries become candidates. A page that is not indexed, loads slowly or has a title that does not say what it is about falls behind here too. To know where you stand for which query, Google rank tracking is still the most concrete starting point.

3. Answer the question in the first paragraph

The system that writes the answer uses a short passage from your page. That passage has to make sense on its own.

Before (illustrative example):

Invoicing software has become indispensable for businesses today. Choosing the right product means weighing up many different criteria.

After (illustrative example):

For a business that sends fewer than 50 invoices a month, there are three things to look for in invoicing software: online payment links on the invoice, automatic import of bank transactions, and reports you can share with your accountant. The table below compares these features and the monthly price across our three plans.

The second version says who it is written for, what the criteria are and what comes next. The example is illustrative.

4. Keep the pages that describe you complete

For ChatGPT to answer correctly when someone asks about your brand, your "About", pricing, contact and service area pages need to be open, current and readable as text. If the price exists only inside an image or behind a "get a quote" button, the answer takes that information from another site, possibly in an outdated form.

5. Be present on the outside sites that get cited

Ask ChatGPT your own questions and look at the sources under the answer. You will find industry directories, comparison articles, forums and news sites. Every source that lists your competitor but not you is a concrete task: register, correct the information, contact the author. Buying fake reviews or bulk links is not part of this.

"Why am I not showing up?" A diagnosis flow

Work through it in order; stop at the first "no" and fix that.

  1. Does ChatGPT search when asked? If there are no sources under the answer, the model is writing from training. Ask again in a way that calls for current information ("in 2026", "right now"). You cannot change an answer that involved no search by editing a page.
  2. Is OAI-SearchBot allowed in robots.txt? If not, fix it and wait at least a day.
  3. Is a CDN or firewall blocking the bot? Look in your server logs for OAI-SearchBot requests and the status code returned. If you see 403, the block is there.
  4. Can the page be found in classic search for that query? If not, that has to be solved first.
  5. Is the answer on the page as text? If it sits inside an image, a PDF or a section that only opens on click, it may not be seen.
  6. Who is being cited in the answer? If they are all directories or comparison sites, getting listed on those sites is a shorter route than your own page.
  7. How many times did you ask? A single try tells you nothing. Ask the same question at least several times on different days.

How do you measure ChatGPT visibility?

Keep three things apart:

  • Mentions and citations: by asking a fixed list of questions on a regular schedule. Your brand name being mentioned and your site being linked are separate columns.
  • Bot visits: requests from OAI-SearchBot (are you being crawled) and ChatGPT-User (are users having your page opened) in your server logs. Because a user agent name can be faked, verify against the IP list OpenAI publishes for any analysis that matters.
  • Visits and conversions: in Google Analytics 4, look at the rows whose session source contains "chatgpt" and at the key events of those sessions. We could not find a commitment in OpenAI's current documentation about which parameter is added to links; build your filter on what shows up in your own data.

Answers change with the question, the day, the country, the language and whether the user is logged in. So rely on repeated measurement, not on a single screenshot. A hands-on table and steps are in measuring AI search visibility.

SEOLOK offers two options. The free AI visibility checker asks a single question live to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Mode; it shows whether your name is mentioned, whether your site is cited and who is recommended instead of you. AI visibility tracking asks your question list every week, gives the rate together with its likely range and shows no number at all below six measured answers. The measurement is based on the answer a logged-out user sees in the site's own country and language; the answer you see in your own account can differ.

Frequently asked questions

If I block GPTBot, will I disappear from ChatGPT?

According to OpenAI's documentation, no. GPTBot is about model training, OAI-SearchBot is about search, and the two are managed separately.

Can you pay to rank higher in ChatGPT?

OpenAI's documentation does not describe a paid option for the ranking of sources in search answers; the help page says results are ranked on multiple factors and that inclusion is not guaranteed. Ads in ChatGPT are a separate product; OAI-AdsBot only checks pages submitted as ads.

Does adding llms.txt help me appear in ChatGPT?

Neither OpenAI's crawler documentation nor its help page mentions llms.txt. Preparing the file does no harm, but the two things named as eligibility conditions are OAI-SearchBot access and IP allowances.

How long after a change will I see a result?

For a robots.txt change, OpenAI says about 24 hours. There is no official time frame for when a content change is reflected in answers. Note the date of the change and keep asking the same questions over the following weeks.

ChatGPT gives wrong information about my brand. What can I do?

First make sure the correct information is on your own site, clearly and as text. Then look at the pages the answer cites; wrong information often comes from an old directory entry or an article that was never updated. Getting that source corrected is the most direct way to correct the answer.

ChatGPT is not the only platform. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode work by different rules; Google AI Overviews optimization covers that side. For a summary of the whole picture, see what is generative engine optimization.
