There is no single answer to "where do I rank?" in local search
A business owner searches on their own phone and sees their site in third place. At the same moment, a customer on the other side of town sees something different. Google results depend on location, device and context, which is why local businesses often either don't measure rankings at all or measure them from the wrong place.
Common problems for local businesses:
- Rankings are checked nationally or from a big city, while nearly all customers are in one region.
- Most customers search on their phones, yet reports rely on desktop results.
- The website and the Google Business Profile get lumped together, so nobody knows which channel is doing what.
- The owner can't look at SEO every day, so problems surface only when the phone stops ringing.
How SEOLOK helps local businesses
Rankings by location and device. Google rank tracking measures each keyword for the location and device you choose. Track "boiler repair" on mobile in a specific province and SEOLOK checks the top 30 organic results as a phone in that location would see them. Tracking mobile and desktop as separate items makes the difference between the two visible instead of assumed.
Everything else on the results page. Local searches often show a map pack, images or an AI overview above the organic listings. SEOLOK records these and shows them next to your position, for example "Also: Map". That helps explain why a third-place ranking brings fewer clicks than expected.
Local demand in Search Console. Search Console analytics splits your queries by country and device, so you can see which service searches earn impressions and how "near me" or city-name queries perform over time. Search Console doesn't break data down by city or province; that's the gap province-level rank tracking fills.
Alerts for people without spare time. SEO alerts catch your site going down with five-minute checks, warn you before your SSL certificate expires and email you when a tracked keyword drops sharply. The weekly digest lets you see the state of things without logging in.
A plain monthly report. The SEO reporting tool creates a PDF on the first of every month with tracked keywords date by date and a Search Console summary written in plain language, which is easy to share with a business partner.
Why mobile and desktop need separate tracking
A large share of local searches happen on the move, on a phone, at the moment of need. The mobile results page is laid out differently: the map, call buttons and images take more room and push organic listings further down. Being fourth on desktop and seventh on mobile for the same keyword is not unusual.
That's why device is part of every tracked item in SEOLOK. Add important keywords for both devices and compare the two lines to see where work is needed. Read them together with the device split in Search Console and you'll spot pages that earn mobile impressions but few clicks. If you suspect mobile speed is the issue, the free Core Web Vitals checker shows your page's real-user data.
Who this suits
This setup fits businesses whose customers are concentrated in one city or a handful of regions: clinics, law and accounting firms, repair and service companies, estate agents, restaurants, gyms and training centres. Chains with several branches can add a separate tracked item for each branch location. Agencies and freelancers serving local clients can use the same structure per client.
An example setup for a local business
- Start with the free Google rank checker: check your main service keyword in your area on mobile.
- Connect Search Console. Sixteen months of history comes in, showing which searches actually bring you impressions.
- Add 10–20 keywords that combine your service with a place name, for the location where your customers are and on mobile. Add each branch location as its own item if you have several.
- When rankings move, the rank change calculator turns old and new positions into places gained or lost and a percentage change.
- Read the monthly report and update service pages that get plenty of impressions but sit in positions 4–10.
Why Google Business Profile is out of scope
To be clear: SEOLOK does not manage your Google Business Profile. It doesn't read or reply to reviews, update opening hours, measure your position in the local map pack or report calls and direction requests from your profile. That work happens in Google's own Business Profile interface. SEOLOK focuses on your website's organic performance; your profile is a separate channel that should be monitored where it lives.
Beyond that, there is no district, neighbourhood or coordinate-level measurement; the finest level is a province. If you want to describe your business with structured data on your site, Google's LocalBusiness structured data guide is a good starting point, and the free SEO site checker shows whether a page already contains structured data.
