What the New Zealand rank checker shows you

Type in your website and a keyword and the checker looks up Google's results for that search in New Zealand, then finds where your site appears among the first 50 organic results. You see your position, the page on your site that ranks, the sites around you and the keyword's estimated monthly searches in New Zealand.

The check is made for New Zealand as a whole, for searches in English, and without the personalisation that your own search history or signed-in Google account adds. That is what keeps the number comparable from one week to the next. Here is what you get:

  • Your position in Google's New Zealand results, from 1 to 50
  • The page on your site that ranks for the search
  • The top 10 results, and every page of results up to position 50, with the sites directly above and below you named
  • Roughly how many times a month the keyword is searched in New Zealand
  • Which extras Google shows for the search, such as map results, People also ask or an AI Overview, and whether your site is cited in the AI Overview

Why check your ranking from a New Zealand location?

Google tailors its results to the searcher's country, language and device and, for many searches, to their town. New Zealand is a small market beside a much bigger one across the Tasman, so what you see from an Australian or American location, or on your own laptop, can be far from what a customer in Palmerston North sees on their phone.

Two things make a New Zealand check worth doing. The competition is different: for shopping and service searches, New Zealand results can include Australian and international sites that also sell here, next to the local businesses you know. And the words are different, so the keyword you check needs to be the one Kiwi customers actually type.

Search the way Kiwis do

New Zealand English has its own words for plenty of everyday things, and Google treats different words as different searches with different results. A page written with Australian, British or American words can miss what New Zealanders really type. These pairs are a good test of whether your pages use your customers' words:

New Zealand wording and the wording used elsewhere for the same search
New Zealanders search forPeople elsewhere search for
dairycorner shop or convenience store
bach (or crib in the south)holiday home
section for saleland or lot for sale
heat pumpair conditioner
WOFvehicle inspection
jandalsflip-flops
chilly bincooler
togsswimsuit
gumbootsrain boots

Some searches only make sense in New Zealand, such as "IRD number", "KiwiSaver", "ACC claim", "LIM report" or "healthy homes assessment". If your business serves these needs, the page that ranks should use the same names. Spelling follows British habits ("colour", "centre", "organise"), so check both versions of an important search and see which one you really rank for.

Māori place names, with and without macrons

Many New Zealand place names are Māori, and people type them in more than one way: "Taupō" and "Taupo", "Whangārei" and "Whangarei", "Ōtaki" and "Otaki". Google usually connects the two spellings, but the results are not always identical, and some places also have a second name in te reo Māori, such as Ōtautahi for Christchurch.

If your town's name has a macron, check your main local keyword both ways ("plumber taupō" and "plumber taupo"). Use the correct spelling with the macron on your pages, as official sources do, and make sure your Google Business Profile and directory listings agree with each other.

How to use the checker

  1. Enter your website, for example yourbusiness.co.nz or yourbusiness.nz. You don't need https:// or www.
  2. Enter the search you want to rank for, the way a New Zealand customer would type it, and choose mobile or desktop. The location is already set to New Zealand.
  3. Press Find my rank. Your position, the ranking page and Google's top 10 appear within a few seconds.

Check the same keyword on both devices and try a few variations: with and without your town or suburb, and with the Kiwi and the general word for your service. A ranking only means something when you know the conditions it was measured under, so keep them the same each time you check.

Reading your result

Your position points to the kind of work that comes next:

  • Positions 1 to 3: the top few results get most of the clicks. Keep the page current and its title clear to hold your place.
  • Positions 4 to 10: you are on page one. Moving up usually takes a more complete answer than the sites above you and a title people want to click.
  • Positions 11 to 20: page two is often the quickest win. Improving the page and linking to it from your other pages can be enough to lift it onto page one.
  • Positions 21 to 50: Google knows the page but trusts others more for this search. A page focused on the search, and a few good links to it, is the usual fix.
  • Not in the top 50: either no page on your site answers this search or the page is too weak for it. Writing or rewriting a focused page comes first.

Google also mixes other results into the page: maps, shopping results, videos, People also ask and AI Overviews. The checker lists which ones appear for your search, because they take attention away from the ordinary results you are competing in.

Local searches: towns, suburbs and regions

For searches with a local angle, such as "plumber", "dentist" or "pharmacy near me", Google leans heavily on map results and on where the searcher is. This checker measures New Zealand as a whole, not a single city or region, so for a local business the most useful checks are the ones with a place in them. In Auckland people often search by suburb ("builder ponsonby", "dentist albany"), and elsewhere by town or region ("electrician hawke's bay"). Check the versions your customers use.

To rank for local searches, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, write your business name, address and phone number the same way everywhere they appear, ask happy customers for Google reviews, and give each service and each area you cover its own page with real details, not the same text with a different suburb dropped in. If you travel to your customers, list the areas you serve on your profile.

English and te reo Māori searches

Te reo Māori is an official language of New Zealand, and its words are part of everyday New Zealand English. Most searches are still typed in English, and this checker measures searches in English. A search written fully in te reo Māori returns its own results, so an English ranking says nothing about how a te reo page appears.

If you publish in both languages, give each language its own page, link the pair with hreflang annotations (en-NZ and mi-NZ), and have the te reo page written or checked by a fluent speaker rather than translated word for word.

If you sell in New Zealand and Australia

Many businesses sell on both sides of the Tasman from one website. Tell Google which version is meant for whom: use hreflang annotations such as en-NZ for New Zealand and en-AU for Australia, show New Zealand prices in NZ dollars including GST, put a New Zealand phone number (+64) and address on the New Zealand pages, and consider a .nz or .co.nz domain or a clearly separate New Zealand section such as /nz/.

Then check the same keyword with the location set to New Zealand and to Australia (our Australia page starts there). The location picker in the tool lets you switch country, so you can confirm that the right page appears in each market.

From a one-off check to tracking

A one-off check tells you where you stand today. Rankings move every day as competitors publish, Google updates its systems and your own site changes, so the question that matters is which way your position is heading.

With a free SEOLOK account you can add your site, connect Google Search Console and have your first keywords measured every week, from New Zealand if you choose that location. Paid plans measure every day, e-mail you when a keyword drops and give you unlimited PDF reports you can send to a client or your manager.

New Zealand rank checker: frequently asked questions

Is this Google rank checker really for New Zealand?

Yes. It asks for the results Google shows to someone searching in New Zealand, in English, and looks for your site in them. The location is preset to New Zealand, and you can change it if you want to compare another country.

Does it use google.co.nz?

It measures Google's results for New Zealand, which are the results people searching from New Zealand see on google.co.nz. The check does not run from your own device or IP address, so your location, history and signed-in account don't affect it.

Does it work for searches in te reo Māori?

Not yet. The checker looks at searches in English. A search written fully in te reo Māori has its own results, so a ranking here does not tell you where a te reo page appears. Māori place names inside an English search work as usual.

Can I check one city or region?

The check covers New Zealand as a whole. For searches without a local angle the results are usually much the same across the country. Local searches such as plumbers, dentists and "near me" vary from town to town, so put your town or suburb in the keyword.

Why does my ranking look different when I search myself?

When you search yourself, Google adjusts the results to your location, your search history, whether you are signed in and the device you use. Visiting your own site often can make it seem to sit higher than it does for other people. The checker removes that personalisation, so use its number as your reference and re-check under the same conditions.

Is the rank checker free, and how many checks do I get?

It is free. You get a few checks a day without an account and more with a free account; the counter under the form shows how many you have left today. If you need more, paid plans include a larger daily allowance and automatic tracking.

Can I see which competitors rank above me?

Yes. The result lists Google's top 10 sites for the search and you can page through to position 50, with your own site marked and the sites directly above and below you named. To compare two websites across a whole set of keywords, use our free competitor analysis tool.

Why do Australian sites show up in my results?

Some Australian businesses also sell to New Zealand, and Google can rank their pages here when it finds them relevant. A page with New Zealand prices, delivery details and contact information gives Google a clear reason to prefer yours for local customers.

Can I track my New Zealand rankings automatically?

Yes. Add your site to a free SEOLOK account, add your keywords and choose New Zealand as the location. Free accounts measure weekly; paid plans measure every day and e-mail you when a keyword drops.

What happens to the searches I enter?

Searches are stored to improve the service and to apply the daily limit. Your IP address is kept only in a scrambled form that can't be reversed. Results come from Google's real search results.
