What the Ireland rank checker shows you

Type in your website and a keyword and the checker looks up Google's results for that search in Ireland, then finds where your site appears among the first 50 organic results. You see your position, the page on your site that ranks, the sites around you and the keyword's estimated monthly searches in Ireland.

The check is made for Ireland as a whole, for searches in English, and without the personalisation that your own search history or signed-in Google account adds. That is what makes the number worth comparing from one week to the next. Here is what you get back:

  • Your position in Google's Irish results, from 1 to 50
  • The page on your site that ranks for the search
  • The top 10 results, and every page of results up to position 50, with the sites directly above and below you named
  • Roughly how many times a month the keyword is searched in Ireland
  • Which extras Google shows for the search, such as map results, People also ask or an AI Overview, and whether your site is cited in the AI Overview

Why check your ranking from an Irish location?

Google tailors its results to the searcher's country, language and device and, for many searches, to their town. Ireland is a small market next to a much bigger one that speaks the same language, so what you see from a British or American location, or on your own laptop, can be a long way from what a customer in Athlone sees on their phone.

Two things make an Irish check worth doing. The competition is different: Irish results for shopping and service searches can include British and international sites that also sell into Ireland, next to the Irish businesses you know. And the words are different, so the keyword you check needs to be the one Irish customers actually type, not the British or American version of it.

Search the way people in Ireland do

Irish English is spelt like British English, so the spelling rarely splits a search. The words do. Many everyday services have an Irish name that people in Britain would not use, and Google treats the two as different searches with different results. These pairs are a good test of whether your pages use the words Irish customers use:

Irish and British wording for the same search
People in Ireland search forPeople in Britain search for
auctioneerestate agent
NCT testMOT test
Eircodepostcode
grindsprivate tutor
crechenursery
BER certEPC certificate
chipperchip shop
RevenueHMRC
garda stationpolice station
Local Property Taxcouncil tax

Some Irish searches have no British equivalent at all: "PPS number", "Leaving Cert results" or "RTB registration". If your business serves these needs, the page that ranks should use the same names, and it should still mention the general word ("estate agent" next to "auctioneer") because some customers type that too. Check both versions of an important search and see which one you really rank for.

Ireland, Northern Ireland and the UK

This checker's Ireland location is the Republic of Ireland. Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, and people searching there get Google's UK results, so a customer in Belfast or Derry can see a different list from a customer in Dundalk, even for the same search a few miles apart.

If you sell on both sides of the border, check your important keywords twice: once with the location set to Ireland and once set to the United Kingdom (our UK page starts there). Give each market its own page where the offer differs, show prices in euro for Ireland and in sterling for Northern Ireland, and mark the two versions with hreflang annotations (en-IE and en-GB) so Google sends each searcher to the right one.

How to use the checker

  1. Enter your website, for example yourbusiness.ie. You don't need https:// or www.
  2. Enter the search you want to rank for, the way an Irish customer would type it, and choose mobile or desktop. The location is already set to Ireland.
  3. Press Find my rank. Your position, the ranking page and Google's top 10 appear within a few seconds.

Check the same keyword on both devices and try a few variations: with and without your town or county, and with the Irish and the general word for your service. A ranking only means something when you know the conditions it was measured under, so keep them the same each time you check.

Reading your result

Your position tells you what kind of work comes next:

  • Positions 1 to 3: most clicks go to the top few results. Keep the page up to date and its title clear to hold your place.
  • Positions 4 to 10: you are on page one. To move up you usually need a more complete answer than the sites above you and a title people want to click.
  • Positions 11 to 20: page two is often the quickest win. Improving the page and linking to it from your other pages can be enough to lift it onto page one.
  • Positions 21 to 50: Google knows the page but trusts others more for this search. A page focused on the search, and a few good links to it, is the usual fix.
  • Not in the top 50: either no page on your site answers this search or the page is too weak for it. Writing or rewriting a focused page comes first.

Google also mixes other results into the page: maps, shopping results, videos, People also ask and AI Overviews. The checker lists which ones appear for your search, because they take attention away from the ordinary results you are competing in.

Local searches: towns, counties and Dublin districts

For searches with a local angle, such as "plumber", "dentist" or "pharmacy near me", Google leans heavily on map results and on where the searcher is. This checker measures Ireland as a whole, so for a local business the most useful checks are the ones with a place in them. People in Ireland often search by county as well as by town ("plumber kildare", "solicitor meath"), and in Dublin by postal district ("dentist dublin 6"). Check the versions your customers use.

To rank for local searches, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, write your business name, address, Eircode and phone number the same way everywhere they appear, ask happy customers for Google reviews, and give each service and each area you cover its own page with real details, not the same text with a different county dropped in. If you travel to your customers, list the areas you serve on your profile.

English and Irish searches

Irish (Gaeilge) is the first official language of the state, but most searches in Ireland are made in English. This checker measures searches in English. A search typed in Irish returns its own results, so an English ranking says nothing about how an Irish-language page appears.

If you publish in both languages, give each language its own page, link the pair with hreflang annotations (en-IE and ga-IE), and write the Irish page in the words Irish speakers really use rather than a word-for-word translation.

If you sell in Ireland and abroad

When one website serves customers in several countries, tell Google which version is meant for whom. Use hreflang annotations such as en-IE for Ireland and en-GB for the UK, show Irish prices in euro with VAT included, put an Irish phone number and address on the Irish pages, and consider a .ie domain (the .ie registry asks for a connection to Ireland) or a clearly separate Irish section such as /ie/.

Then check the same keyword with the location set to Ireland and to your other markets. The location picker in the tool lets you switch country, so you can confirm that the right page appears in each one.

From a one-off check to tracking

A one-off check tells you where you stand today. Rankings move every day as competitors publish, Google updates its systems and your own site changes, so the question that matters is which way your position is moving.

With a free SEOLOK account you can add your site, connect Google Search Console and have your first keywords measured every week, from Ireland if you choose that location. Paid plans measure every day, e-mail you when a keyword drops and give you unlimited PDF reports you can send to a client or your manager.

Ireland rank checker: frequently asked questions

Is this Google rank checker really for Ireland?

Yes. It asks for the results Google shows to someone searching in Ireland, in English, and looks for your site in them. The location is preset to Ireland, and you can change it if you want to compare another country.

Does it use google.ie?

It measures Google's results for Ireland, which are the results people searching from Ireland see on google.ie. The check does not run from your own device or IP address, so your location, history and signed-in account don't affect it.

Does it cover Northern Ireland?

Not with the Ireland location. Northern Ireland is part of the UK and searchers there get Google's UK results, so set the location to United Kingdom, or use our UK page, to check how you rank for customers in Belfast or Derry.

Does it work for searches in Irish?

Not yet. The checker looks at searches in English, which is how most people in Ireland search. A search typed in Irish has its own results, so a ranking here does not tell you where an Irish-language page appears.

Why does my ranking look different when I search myself?

When you search yourself, Google adjusts the results to your location, your search history, whether you are signed in and the device you use. Visiting your own site often can make it seem to sit higher than it does for other people. The checker removes that personalisation, so use its number as your reference and re-check under the same conditions.

Is the rank checker free, and how many checks do I get?

It is free. You get a few checks a day without an account and more with a free account; the counter under the form shows how many you have left today. If you need more, paid plans include a larger daily allowance and automatic tracking.

Can I check one county or town?

The check covers Ireland as a whole. For searches without a local angle the results are usually much the same across the country. Local searches such as plumbers, dentists and "near me" vary from town to town, so put your town or county in the keyword.

Can I see which competitors rank above me?

Yes. The result lists Google's top 10 sites for the search and you can page through to position 50, with your own site marked and the sites directly above and below you named. To compare two websites across a whole set of keywords, use our free competitor analysis tool.

Can I track my Irish rankings automatically?

Yes. Add your site to a free SEOLOK account, add your keywords and choose Ireland as the location. Free accounts measure weekly; paid plans measure every day and e-mail you when a keyword drops.

What happens to the searches I enter?

Searches are stored to improve the service and to apply the daily limit. Your IP address is kept only in a scrambled form that can't be reversed. Results come from Google's real search results.
