What the India rank checker shows you
Type in your website and a keyword and the checker looks up Google's results for that search in India, then finds where your site appears among the first 50 organic results. You see your position, the page on your site that ranks, the sites around you and the keyword's estimated monthly searches in India.
The check is made for India as a whole, for searches in English, and without the personalisation that your own search history or signed-in Google account adds. That is what makes the number fair to compare from one week to the next. Here is what the result contains:
- Your position in Google's results for India, from 1 to 50
- The page on your site that ranks for the search
- The top 10 results, and every page of results up to position 50, with the sites directly above and below you named
- Roughly how many times a month the keyword is searched in India
- Which extras Google shows for the search, such as map results, People also ask or an AI Overview, and whether your site is cited in the AI Overview
Why check your ranking from an Indian location?
Google tailors its results to the searcher's country, language and device and, for many searches, to their city or locality. A ranking you see from an office abroad, or on your own laptop where Google already knows your site, can be far from what a customer in Indore sees on their phone. And in India most people search on their phones, so the mobile result is usually the one that matters most.
Two things make an Indian check worth doing. The competition is different: for searches in English, results in India can include American and British sites next to Indian ones, so you may be competing with publishers you never think of. And the words are different, so the keyword you check needs to be the one Indian customers actually type.
Search the way people in India do
Indian English has its own words for many everyday things, and Google treats different words as different searches with different results. A page written with American or British words can miss the search Indian customers really make. These pairs are a good test of whether your pages use the words your customers do:
| People in India search for | Americans or Britons would type |
|---|---|
| 2BHK flat | two-bedroom apartment |
| PG accommodation | shared room or lodging |
| advocate | lawyer or solicitor |
| chartered accountant | CPA or accountant |
| coaching classes | tutoring or test prep |
| tiffin service | meal delivery |
| mobile recharge | phone top-up |
| two-wheeler insurance | motorbike insurance |
| petrol pump | gas station |
| godown | warehouse |
Amounts are searched the Indian way too: "flats under 50 lakh" or "1 crore home loan", not "5 million rupees". Many searches only make sense in India, such as "Aadhaar update", "PAN card apply", "GST registration" or "ITR filing", and many people type Hindi words in English letters, like "kaise" or "sasta". Check the versions your customers use and see which one you really rank for.
Bengaluru or Bangalore? Check both names
Several Indian cities have an official name and an older one that people still type: Bengaluru and Bangalore, Gurugram and Gurgaon, Mumbai and Bombay, Kolkata and Calcutta. Google often treats the two as the same place, but not always in the same way, and your competitors may target one name more than the other.
For a local business the city name is often the most important word in the search, so check your main keyword with both names ("dentist in bangalore" and "dentist in bengaluru"). Use the name your customers use in your page titles, and mention the other one naturally in the text.
English and Indian-language searches
India has 22 languages listed in its Constitution, and many searches are made in Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Marathi and other Indian languages. This checker measures searches in English. A search typed in Devanagari or another Indian script returns its own results with its own competitors, so a good English ranking says nothing about how you appear in those.
If you publish in more than one language, give each language its own page, link them with hreflang annotations (en-IN for English, hi-IN for Hindi and so on), and write each page in the words people really use in that language rather than a word-for-word translation.
How to use the checker
- Enter your website, for example yourbusiness.in or yourbusiness.co.in. You don't need https:// or www.
- Enter the search you want to rank for, the way a customer in India would type it, and choose mobile or desktop. The location is already set to India.
- Press Find my rank. Your position, the ranking page and Google's top 10 appear within a few seconds.
Check the same keyword on mobile first, then on desktop, and try a few variations: with and without your city, with "in" and without it ("advocate in mumbai" and "advocate mumbai"), and with both names of your city. A ranking only means something when you know the conditions it was measured under, so keep them the same each time you check.
Reading your result
Your position tells you what to work on next:
- Positions 1 to 3: the first few results take most of the clicks. Keep the page current and its title clear to hold your place.
- Positions 4 to 10: you are on page one. To climb you usually need a more complete answer than the sites above you and a title people want to click.
- Positions 11 to 20: page two is often the quickest win. Improving the page and linking to it from your other pages can lift it onto page one.
- Positions 21 to 50: Google knows the page but trusts others more for this search. A page focused on the search, and a few good links to it, is the usual fix.
- Not in the top 50: either no page on your site answers this search or the page is too weak for it. Writing or rewriting a focused page comes first.
Google also mixes other results into the page: maps, shopping results, videos, People also ask and AI Overviews. The checker lists which ones appear for your search, because on a phone screen they can push the ordinary results far down.
Local searches: cities, localities and "near me"
For searches with a local angle, such as "dentist", "gym" or "pharmacy near me", Google leans heavily on map results and on where the searcher is. This checker measures India as a whole, not a single city or state, so for a local business the most useful checks are the ones with a place in them. In big cities people often search by locality as well as by city ("dentist in koramangala", "gym in andheri west"), so check the localities you serve.
To rank for local searches, claim and complete your Google Business Profile, write your business name, address with PIN code and phone number the same way everywhere they appear, ask happy customers for Google reviews, and give each service and each area you cover its own page with real details, not the same text with a different locality dropped in.
If you sell in India and abroad
When one website serves customers in India and in other countries, tell Google which version is meant for whom. Use hreflang annotations such as en-IN for India and en-US for the United States, show Indian prices in rupees and say whether GST is included, put an Indian phone number (+91) and address on the Indian pages, and consider a .in domain or a clearly separate Indian section such as /in/.
Then check the same keyword with the location set to India and to your other markets. The location picker in the tool lets you switch country, so you can confirm that the right page appears in each one.
From a one-off check to tracking
A one-off check tells you where you stand today. Rankings move every day as competitors publish, Google updates its systems and your own site changes, so the useful question is which way your position is moving.
With a free SEOLOK account you can add your site, connect Google Search Console and have your first keywords measured every week, from India if you choose that location. Paid plans measure every day, e-mail you when a keyword drops and give you unlimited PDF reports you can send to a client or your manager.
India rank checker: frequently asked questions
Is this Google rank checker really for India?
Yes. It asks for the results Google shows to someone searching in India, in English, and looks for your site in them. The location is preset to India, and you can change it if you want to compare another country.
Does it use google.co.in?
It measures Google's results for India, which are the results people searching from India see on google.co.in. The check does not run from your own device or IP address, so your location, history and signed-in account don't affect it.
Does it work for searches in Hindi or other Indian languages?
Not yet. The checker looks at searches in English. A search typed in Hindi, Tamil or another Indian language has its own results and its own competitors, so a ranking here does not tell you where a page in that language appears.
Can I check one city or state?
The check covers India as a whole. For searches without a local angle the results are usually much the same across the country. Local searches such as dentists, gyms and "near me" vary from city to city, so put your city or locality in the keyword.
Why does my ranking look different when I search myself?
When you search yourself, Google adjusts the results to your location, your search history, whether you are signed in and the device you use. Visiting your own site often can make it seem to sit higher than it does for other people. The checker removes that personalisation, so use its number as your reference and re-check under the same conditions.
Is the rank checker free, and how many checks do I get?
It is free. You get a few checks a day without an account and more with a free account; the counter under the form shows how many you have left today. If you need more, paid plans include a larger daily allowance and automatic tracking.
Can I see which competitors rank above me?
Yes. The result lists Google's top 10 sites for the search and you can page through to position 50, with your own site marked and the sites directly above and below you named. To compare two websites across a whole set of keywords, use our free competitor analysis tool.
Should I check on mobile or desktop?
Start with mobile, because most people in India search on their phones and the mobile results can differ from the desktop ones. Then check desktop too if your customers are businesses that search from office computers.
Can I track my rankings in India automatically?
Yes. Add your site to a free SEOLOK account, add your keywords and choose India as the location. Free accounts measure weekly; paid plans measure every day and e-mail you when a keyword drops.
What happens to the searches I enter?
Searches are stored to improve the service and to apply the daily limit. Your IP address is kept only in a scrambled form that can't be reversed. Results come from Google's real search results.
