Guide
What is a Google rank checker and how do you use it?
Knowing where your site ranks on Google is the first step of any SEO work. This guide explains how a Google rank checker works, why results differ by city and device, and what you can do to rank higher — in plain words.
What does a Google rank checker do?
A Google rank checker shows the position of your site in Google's results when a specific keyword is searched. What you see in your own browser can be misleading, because Google personalises it by your history, location and account. SEOLOK's rank checker measures Google's real results for the location you choose, without personalisation.
So you answer questions like "where does someone searching for a dentist on mobile in Istanbul see me?" with real data instead of guesses. Checking keyword rankings is also the fastest way to get to know your competitors and decide which page deserves your effort.
How to use the rank checker
No technical knowledge needed. Three steps:
- Enter your website (e.g. yoursite.com); no need for https or www.
- Enter the keyword you care about, pick a country or one of Türkiye's 81 provinces, and a device (mobile or desktop).
- Press "Find my rank". Your position, ranking page, Google's top 10 and the keyword's monthly search volume arrive in seconds.
Below the result you'll see how often the keyword is searched each month, roughly how many visits a better position would bring, and what else Google shows for the search, such as an AI Overview or map results.
Why do I see different rankings by city and device?
Google changes results by the searcher's location, especially for local services (lawyers, dentists, plumbers, restaurants). A site ranking #3 in Istanbul may not even be on page one in Ankara, so measuring in the province where your customers are gives the most accurate answer.
The device matters too. Most searches happen on mobile, and Google favours fast, mobile-friendly pages in mobile results. Checking mobile and desktop separately shows where the problem is.
Local SEO: ranking in your city
If your customers are in a specific city, the real competition is in that city's searches. For searches like "divorce lawyer Ankara" or "dental clinic Kadıköy", Google favours map results and nearby businesses. A province-level rank check shows where you stand in that local competition.
To rank higher locally, create pages that combine your city and service, keep your address and phone identical everywhere, collect customer reviews and keep your Google Business Profile current. Then check the same keyword in different provinces to see where you're strong.
10 ways to improve your Google ranking
Once you know your rank, these steps help the most:
- Put the target keyword and a click-worthy phrase in every important page title.
- Write meta descriptions that answer the searcher's question; click-through rate affects rankings indirectly.
- Make content answer the question better than competitors and keep older pages up to date.
- Make sure the site loads fast on mobile (Core Web Vitals): compress large images, remove unnecessary plugins.
- Link to important pages from your other pages (internal linking) so Google sees them as important.
- Merge weak pages covering the same topic; pages competing with each other split rankings.
- If you're a local business, complete your Google Business Profile and keep your address identical on your site.
- Earn links from trustworthy sites in your field; quality beats quantity.
- Show author and expertise information; trust signals matter especially for health, legal and finance topics.
- Measure your rankings regularly: without tracking you can't know what worked.
One-off check or regular rank tracking?
A one-off check shows today's position. But Google rankings change every day: competitors publish, Google ships updates, your site may develop a technical problem. Tracking your key keywords regularly is the only way to spot drops early.
In SEOLOK your tracked keywords are measured automatically every day; you get an e-mail when you drop and see which page and which competitor moved. Daily tracking also shows within days whether a change you made (new title, refreshed content) worked.
SEO and GEO: show up in AI answers too
People no longer search only on Google; they also ask AI assistants like ChatGPT and read Google's AI Overviews. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the work of getting your site cited as a source in those AI answers.
Good SEO is the foundation of GEO: pages that give clear answers, stay current, show expertise and are mentioned by other trustworthy sites are cited more often by AI. SEOLOK also measures whether your site is mentioned in AI answers.
Analyse your whole site, not one keyword
The rank checker looks at one keyword. To see which searches show your site, which pages bring visitors and where you miss opportunities, you need Google Search Console data.
When you sign up free with your Google account, Search Console and Google Analytics connect in one sign-in, 16 months of history is imported, and you get a plain-language dashboard, a to-do list and drop alerts. If your site isn't in Search Console yet, our step-by-step guide gets it added in minutes.
